The bulkhead is one of the few exterior fixtures that has never really gone out of use, because the shape solves a practical problem. A shallow disc mounted flat on the wall has nothing to catch wind, nothing to fill with water and no arm to work loose, which is why the form turns up on boats and stairwells as often as it does on porches. What has changed is the light source inside it.

Six Face Styles on the Same Round Body

The plain and half-round faces give the cleanest result and are the closest to a contemporary flush disc. The half-round in particular throws a crescent of light down the wall rather than an even circle, which is a subtler effect next to a doorway.

The triangle, cross, line and fence faces add a raised grille over the diffuser. These are the more traditional bulkhead look and they cast a shadow pattern onto the surrounding wall as well as lighting it, which suits stone, brick and older facades better than a plain disc does. The grille also breaks up the brightness of the diffuser, so the fixture is easier to look at directly from a seating area.
