Outdoor Wall Light with a Seeded Glass Lantern Shade

A front door light has one job at night. It has to show you the lock and the step without blinding whoever walks up to it. A bare bulb behind clear glass does the opposite. This lantern handles it two ways. The glass is seeded, so the bulb is broken up before the light leaves. The metal cap on top blocks the upward throw and pushes everything down onto the path.

Seeded Glass and the Caged Lantern Shape

Seeded glass has small air bubbles set through it. They are put there on purpose. Each bubble bends a little of the light off course, so the surface glows instead of showing a filament. From the path you see a warm cylinder, not a bulb.

Flat metal bars run around the outside of the glass in a simple grid. They are structural as much as decorative and they hold the glass against wind. They also cast soft shadow lines onto the wall on either side.

The capped top is the part that matters most at night. Without it, half the output goes straight up and does nothing. With it, that light bounces back down through the shade and lands where you need it.

Mounting It by a Door or Along a Path

The fixture is 10 in high and 6 in wide, which is a mid size lantern. It suits a front door, a back step or a garage side entry. It is small enough not to crowd a narrow door frame.

Fit the backplate about 66 in above the ground. That puts the shade near eye height and the light on the lock. Beside a double door, fit one on each side. Beside a single door, fit one on the handle side.

The arm curves up and over before the lantern drops, so the shade hangs clear of the wall. That keeps the wall itself from taking the light.

Outdoor Rating, Bulbs and Wiring

The fixture is rated for outdoor use and the finish is made for weather. Mount it under an eave or a porch roof where you can. Direct rain on any wall light shortens its life, whatever the rating says.

The socket takes an E26 or E27 bulb and none is included. A warm white LED near 2700K is the right choice here. Cooler bulbs look clinical on a front door and pull more insects.

It is hardwired and rated 110V-240V, so it runs on a US 120V circuit. There is no sensor and no dusk to dawn switch built in. If you want one, wire the fixture through an external photocell or a timer at the switch.
