Wood Wall Sconce with an Iron Dome Shade and Bird

Wood and painted iron are the two materials Japandi rooms lean on. This sconce uses both and nothing else. The wood is left natural, with the grain showing on the disc and the arm. The iron dome is painted flat. Neither material shines. The fixture reads quiet on the wall when it is off and warm when it is on. That is most of the appeal of the style in one small piece.

How the Iron Dome Directs the Light

The dome is solid iron and painted on both faces. No light passes through it.

Everything the bulb makes leaves through the open bottom. That gives a bright circle below the fixture and a dark wall above it.

Over a bedside table that circle lands on the surface and the top of a book. It does not spill across the bed.

Because the dome is small, the pool of light is tight. Use this as a reading light or an accent, not as the only light in a room.

The dome is small relative to the wood disc behind it. That balance is what makes the fixture read as a piece of furniture rather than as a fitting. It looks intentional against a plain wall.

The Wood Backplate and Arm

The disc that fixes to the wall is solid wood with a visible grain. Every one is slightly different.

The arm is a short metal rod that runs into a turned wood block. The block holds the socket and the dome hangs from it.

That wood block is what stops the fixture reading as plain metalwork. It warms the join between the arm and the shade.

The wood is left in its natural tone. It suits oak and ash furniture, and it sits well against white, clay or sage walls.

Colours, the Bird Option and Fitting

Four versions are offered. The dome is black or white, and each comes with or without a small white bird on the arm.

The bird is a moulded figure that perches where the arm meets the socket. It is fixed and cannot be moved or removed.

Choose the plain version for a quiet, purely Japandi look. The bird version adds a small piece of character to a child's room or a reading corner.

The socket takes an E26 bulb, not included. A warm 3000K bulb suits the wood best. The fixture is hardwired and for indoor use.

The wood is a natural material, so the tone and grain vary between pieces. Two mounted side by side will not match exactly. That is normal for real timber and is part of why it looks warmer than a printed finish.
