Traditional Gold Wall Sconce Fabric Shade with Ceramic Accents

Fabric shades have gone out of fashion on ceiling lights and stayed on wall lights, and there is a reason for that. A wall sconce is usually seen at eye level. Glass and metal both hand you a bright edge to look at. Fabric does not. It glows evenly from top to bottom and hides the bulb completely. In a hallway or a dining room where people walk past at close range, that is worth more than it sounds.

One Light or Two, and How Wide Each Is

The single light version is 6 in wide and 16.5 in tall. It is a narrow upright shape, made for a spot where there is not much wall. Beside a doorway, along a corridor or flanking a mirror, it fits where a wider fitting would not.

The two light version spreads to 16.5 in wide at the same height. Two arms curve out from a single backplate, each with its own shade. It is a much larger presence and puts out roughly twice the light. Over a sideboard, a fireplace or a bed it works as a centrepiece. In a narrow hall it will crowd.

The Ceramic Bead and the Cast Backplate

The stem below each shade carries a smooth pale ceramic bead, a soft green grey that the specification calls faux jade. It breaks up what would otherwise be a plain gold arm and it is the detail that stops the fixture reading as generic.

The backplate is an oval with a raised cast pattern around its edge. On the two light version it is the piece both arms spring from, so it is doing structural work as well as decorative. Both parts are finished in the same gold as the arms.

The shades are plain white fabric with a slight taper, wider at the bottom than the top. They are the quiet part of the fixture, which is deliberate. Everything decorative happens below them.

Bulbs and Fitting

The socket is E12 or E14, the small candle size, not the standard screw base. Check before ordering bulbs. No bulb is supplied. Because the shade is opaque fabric, the bulb never shows, so the shape of it does not matter.

Warm white near 2700K is the right colour. Anything cooler will drain the gold and fight the warm fabric. The sconce is hardwired to a wall box with no plug and no cord. It is rated for 110V-120V as well as 220V-240V, so it runs on a US circuit. Mount it around eye level, roughly 60 to 66 in from the floor in a hallway.
