Brass Wall Sconce on a Folding Swing Arm

The arm has two joints, one at the wall and one at the shade. Fold it flat against the wall when you are not using it. Swing it out over a book or a desk when you are. The shade tilts as well, so you can point the light down rather than across the room. The finish is antique brass, warm rather than bright. A fixed sconce puts light in one place forever. That is fine if you got the place right. A swing arm lets you change your mind. Move the chair, move the light. Read in bed one night and at the desk the next. The arm folds at two points and the shade pivots at the end, so between them you can put the light almost anywhere within reach of the wall.

Four Shade Shapes and How They Aim the Light

The cone is 7 in wide and 8 in tall and is the middle option. It narrows the beam and is the best all round choice for reading. The deep horn is the same 7 in width but 10.5 in tall. The extra depth pushes the beam tighter still and hides the bulb better from the side.

The flat disc is 8.5 in wide and only 6 in tall. It spreads light much wider and washes the wall rather than focusing on a page. The scalloped shade is the widest at 9.5 in and shallowest at 5.5 in, with a wavy rim. It is the decorative one and it throws the softest, broadest light of the four.

Which Arm Length to Order

The arm comes in two sections. The short version is 6 in plus 6 in, so it reaches about a foot from the wall when straightened. The long version is 8 in plus 8 in and reaches around 16 in.

Pick the short arm for a narrow hallway or beside a chair pushed close to the wall. Pick the long arm if the sconce has to reach over a bed, a wide headboard or a desk that sits away from the wall. Both fold back to nearly flat, so the long arm does not cost you space when it is not in use.

Fitting and Bulbs

The backplate is 5 in wide and covers a standard round junction box. The sconce is hardwired, so there is no plug and no cord. If you want one where there is no box, an electrician will need to run a cable.

The socket takes an E26 or E27 bulb and none is included. All four shades are metal and open at the bottom, so a bare bulb is visible from below. A frosted or coated lamp is kinder to the eye than a clear one. Warm white near 2700K matches the antique brass. The fixture is rated for 110V-120V and 220V-240V and weighs about 3.5 lb.
