Bedside Wall Sconce with a Wood Mount and Tilting Shade

Aiming the Shade Where You Need It

The bell shade sits on a short stem and turns on that joint. It holds its angle once set.

Pointed down, the beam is narrow and lands on a small area. That is the reading position.

Pointed at the wall, the light bounces and spreads. The corner glows without anything being bright.

The shade is opaque, so nothing escapes sideways. The only light you get is the light you aimed.

The joint is a friction fit rather than a ratchet. That means you can set any angle you like within its range instead of picking from fixed steps.

The Wood Backplate

The disc that fixes to the wall is natural wood with the grain left showing.

It softens the fixture. A painted metal shade on a painted metal plate reads industrial. On wood it reads Nordic.

The wood tone is warm and light. It suits oak, ash and birch furniture and sits well against white or pale walls.

Because the disc is round and small, it covers a standard wall box neatly with no gap to fill.

Wood and metal expand at different rates, but the disc is small enough that this never shows. The join stays tight and there is nothing to tighten later.

Colours, Size and Fitting

Four shade colours are offered. Black and grey are quiet and disappear against a dark wall.

White reads soft and almost vanishes on a pale wall. Yellow is the one that adds colour to the room.

The fixture is 5.1 in wide and 7.1 in high. Mounted about 24 in above a mattress it sits at a comfortable reading height.

It is hardwired to a wall box. There is no plug and no inline switch, so it needs a wired point behind it.

Because the fixture is hardwired there is no cord hanging down the wall behind the bed. That is the main reason to choose a sconce over a plug in reading lamp in the first place.

Mounted in a pair either side of a bed, aim both shades inward for reading or both outward for a wider wash. Two aimed differently looks accidental rather than deliberate.
