Woven Rope Wall Lamp with a Natural Fiber Shade

A woven shade does something solid materials cannot. Because the rope is wound with tiny gaps between each turn, light escapes through the weave itself as well as from the open ends, so the shade becomes a lit texture rather than a barrier. From across a room you see a warm striped drum rather than a lamp with a bulb inside it.

Where natural fiber suits the room

Rope, rattan and jute all read as warm and informal, so this fitting belongs in a room that already has some texture in it: linen, timber, stone, a woven headboard, a rug with some weight to it. The photographs show it against exactly those materials and it looks at home in all of them.

In a hard, glossy room of glass, chrome and painted plaster it will look like an outlier rather than an accent. If your scheme is built on smooth surfaces, one of the glass or metal sconces in this range will sit more comfortably. The weave also softens the shadow the fitting casts, which is why it reads as warm even on a cold stone wall.

Projection and mounting height

At 10 inches deep this projects considerably further from the wall than most sconces, which is worth measuring before you commit. In a narrow hallway that is enough to catch a shoulder, so it is better suited to a bedroom wall, above a sofa, or beside a bed where nobody walks close to the wall.

Because light leaves from both open ends, mounting height changes the effect more than usual. Higher up you get a strong wash on the ceiling. Lower down, closer to 4 feet beside a bed, more of the light lands where you would read. Both work, but they are noticeably different results.

The included bulb and caring for rope

The E27 LED bulb is supplied, so the lamp works out of the box. The specification states it is not dimmable, so plan on a plain switch rather than a dimmer circuit, and note that fitting a dimmable bulb later will only work if the supplied lamp is replaced with one.

Natural fiber needs a light touch. Dust it with a soft brush or a vacuum on its lowest setting rather than a cloth, which can snag the weave, and keep it out of damp rooms since rope absorbs moisture and can discolor. Kept dry and dusted it holds its color well, and the fiber tone deepens slightly with age in a way most people find improves it.
