Vintage Wall Sconce with a Cone Shade and Brass Socket

The look here comes from one detail. Everything is painted flat except the socket, which is bare brass. That brass sits right at the centre of the fixture, under a wide cone shade. A visible filament bulb screws straight into it. It is the way workshop and shop lights were made before anyone tried to hide the fitting, and it still reads warmer than a fully enclosed sconce.

The Brass Socket and the Cone Shade

The socket is knurled brass and left unpainted. It catches the light from the bulb below it.

The shade is a wide, shallow cone, painted inside and out. Light leaves through the open base only.

That gives a broad, even pool below the fixture. It is a wider spread than a deep shade would give.

The shade tips at the joint where it meets the socket, so you can set the angle once and leave it.

The shade is shallow, so the bulb sits low in it and is visible from below. That is deliberate on this style, but it does mean the bulb you choose is part of the look rather than hidden.

Seven Colours to Choose From

Seven shade colours are offered. All are flat, muted tones rather than gloss.

White and grey are the quiet ones. On a pale wall the fixture reads as shape rather than colour.

Green, blue and red are the strongest. Against a panelled or a papered wall they hold their own as a feature.

Whichever colour you pick, the brass socket is the same. It ties the range together and gives the warm tone the paint does not.

The paint is flat rather than gloss. Against a papered or panelled wall that matt surface keeps the fixture from looking plastic, which is the usual failure of a coloured metal shade.

Bulbs, Size and Fitting

The socket takes an E27 bulb up to 40W. No bulb is included, so order one alongside the light.

Because the socket is exposed and the shade is shallow, the bulb shows. A clear filament bulb suits this fixture and a plain frosted one does not.

The shade is 8.1 in across. Above a bedside table it covers the surface without leaning over the bed.

The fixture mounts on a round wall plate. It is hardwired, so it needs a wired point behind the plate.

Two of these either side of a bed or a mirror is the usual arrangement. Because the shade is wide at 8.1 in, leave a clear span between them so the two pools of light do not overlap into one.
