Waterproof Up and Down Outdoor Wall Light

An outdoor wall light that throws its beam in two directions at once, sending one cone up the wall and another down it from a single slim housing. Where the beams meet the surface they leave a symmetrical pattern that gives a plain render or stone wall something to do after dark. The aluminium body is waterproof and rust-proof, and the LED inside is integrated and rated at 50,000 hours. Six sizes run from a 3 inch 2 watt unit up to a 12.6 inch 12 watt one, in white or black.

Up and down fittings do something a single-direction light cannot: they show you the wall. A downlight alone lights the ground and leaves everything above it black, which flattens a facade into a dark plane with a bright strip at the bottom. Sending light in both directions puts the surface itself back in play, and the two overlapping cones become the decoration.

How Up and Down Lighting Reads

The effect depends almost entirely on what the wall is made of. On smooth white render the beams are clean and graphic, with crisp edges and an obvious symmetry. On stone, brick or timber cladding the grazing angle picks up every joint and change of depth, which is far more dramatic and is usually the reason people choose this style.

Beam spread also determines spacing. Set several units too close and the cones overlap into a continuous wash, losing the pattern that makes the fitting worth having. Too far apart and the wall between them goes dead. Somewhere around 6 to 10 feet apart suits most of the smaller sizes, more for the higher wattage units.

Six sizes span 3 to 12.6 inches and 2 to 12 watts, and the two scale together. The small 2 watt unit is an accent - it marks a step, a gate post or a threshold without lighting anything. The 12 watt at 12.6 inches is a genuine light source that will handle an entrance on its own.

A common mistake is buying the smallest size for a large wall because the photographs make every version look impressive. Photographs are taken close up. On a two storey elevation a 3 inch fitting reads as a dot. Measure the wall, then pick the size that looks proportionate at the distance people will actually stand.
