Because the backplate is only 4 inches across, even a saturated color reads as a small punctuation mark rather than a statement, which makes the bolder options easier to live with than they would be on a larger sconce. One practical note: pick the backplate against the wall color rather than against the furniture, since the plate sits flat on the wall and is the part you see in daylight when the light is off.

Bulbs, scale and mounting height

It takes two E14 bulbs and they are included, so the fitting works out of the box. E14 is the small screw base, worth noting if you replace them later, and a warm LED suits the acrylic better than a cool one since the shade takes on the color of whatever is behind it.

At 9.1 inches tall and under 5 inches wide this is a small fitting, so it works best in a pair or a row rather than alone on a large wall. Beside a bed, mount it at around 4 to 4.5 feet so the downward shade lights the book rather than the pillow. In a hallway, 5 to 5.5 feet keeps both shades clear of eye level as you walk past.
