Ribbed Glass Globe Pendant Light with a Brass Fitting

A clear globe is the hardest pendant shape to get right, because there is nowhere for the bulb to hide. Everything depends on what you screw into it. Ribbing the glass helps: the vertical flutes refract the filament into a series of soft repeats instead of one hard point, so the fitting stays comfortable to sit under even at eye level over a table.

Choosing a diameter for a glass globe

The three sizes are 5.9, 7.9 and 9.8 inches across. The smallest is a genuinely small pendant, right for a bedside drop, a narrow hallway or a set of three over a breakfast bar where you want repetition rather than presence.

The 9.8 inch globe is the one that works alone. Over a round dining table or in a stairwell it has enough mass to anchor the space by itself. If you are hanging a single pendant and hesitating between sizes, take the larger one, because a globe that is slightly too big still reads as deliberate while one that is too small reads as an oversight.

Amber, clear and grey glass compared

Clear glass is the brightest and the least forgiving. It gives you the most light for the wattage and shows the bulb completely, so it pairs best with a decorative filament lamp you actually want on display.

Amber and grey both act as a filter. Amber warms everything passing through it and pushes the room toward candlelight, which suits a dining table. Grey knocks the glare back without shifting the color, so it is the quieter option in a room with a lot of white and a lot of daylight. Worth knowing: the glass color changes the apparent brightness as well as the mood, so an amber globe with the same bulb will read noticeably dimmer than a clear one. If you are lighting a working surface rather than a dining table, clear is the safer pick, and you can soften it with a lower-output lamp instead.

Hanging a cluster at staggered heights

The 59 inch cable is cut to length at installation, and that is what makes a cluster possible. Three globes hung at slightly different drops over a round table look composed; three hung at identical heights look like a mistake unless the table is rectangular and they are evenly spaced along it.

A practical starting point is to set the lowest globe about 30 inches above the table and step each of the others up by four to six inches. Mixing diameters helps too, with the largest hung lowest. The fitting takes a standard E27 screw bulb, not included, and is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms only.
