Ribbed Glass Pendant Light with a Fluted Shade
The shade on this pendant is ribbed from top to bottom. Vertical flutes run the full height of the glass. Each rib bends the light a little, so the shade glows in stripes. That breaks up the bulb behind it and takes the hard edge off the glare. The glass is tinted, so the light picks up its color on the way out. It hangs from a slim metal collar on a matching cord. One standard E26 or E27 bulb fits, and none is included.

A clear glass pendant looks good until you switch it on. Then you are looking straight at a bulb. Ribbed glass fixes that without giving up the glass. The flutes act like a row of small lenses down the side of the shade. Light leaving the shade is split into vertical bands, so no single point is bright enough to hurt. You still get the shape and the color of glass, and you can sit under it.
How the Fluted Glass Handles Glare
The ribs are moulded into the glass, running from the top of the shade to the bottom. Each one is a shallow curve. Light hitting the inside face is bent outward at a slightly different angle than the flat sections beside it.
The effect is a striped shade rather than a single glowing surface. It reads as texture from across the room and as a soft column of light from directly below.
The glass is tinted as well as ribbed. Green, gray and amber each shift the light before it leaves. Amber is the warmest of the three. Gray is the most neutral and the darkest when the light is off.
Three Shade Shapes and Where They Suit
The cylinder is 8 in wide and 12 in tall. It is the balanced one and the safest choice over a bench or a bedside table.
The capsule is narrower at 5 in wide and 12.5 in tall. Hung in a row of three it keeps a long island from looking crowded. It also works either side of a bed.
The oval is the wide one, 12 in across and 11 in tall. It flattens out and spreads light sideways as well as down, which suits a dining table or a single spot over a console. Do not hang it low over a bench.
Finishes, Bulbs and Wiring
The collar and cord come in brass or black. Brass warms the whole fixture and pairs well with the amber glass. Black keeps it quiet and lets the shade do the work.
The socket takes an E26 or E27 bulb and none is supplied. A warm white LED around 2700K suits every color. A clear filament bulb sharpens the stripes; a frosted bulb softens them.
The fixture is hardwired to a ceiling box and rated 110V-120V and 220V-240V. Over a table, leave about 30 in between the table top and the bottom of the shade.
There is no plug and no inline switch, so it runs off the wall switch that already controls the ceiling box.
