Gooseneck Outdoor Porch Light with a Wide Iron Barn Shade

A porch light has two jobs. It has to put usable light on a doorstep, and it has to survive the weather doing it. This one is built for both. The shade is cast iron and wide enough to throw light across a whole entrance. The gooseneck arm carries it out over the step. The IP44 rating covers splashing rain from any direction. It looks like an old barn light because that is the shape that works.

Why the Gooseneck Arm Matters

A flat wall light throws most of its light back onto the wall it is fixed to. The gooseneck arm fixes that.

The arm lifts up from the backplate, curves over and drops. The shade ends up well clear of the wall.

Light then falls onto the step and the path rather than onto brickwork. That is the whole point of the shape.

Two shade angles are offered. The straight version points the beam straight down. The tilted version angles it slightly outward, which suits a wall beside a path.

Built for Rain, Wind and Salt Air

The body and shade are die cast iron with an aluminium shell. Both are heavy and both hold a finish outdoors.

The IP44 rating means the fixture handles splashing water from any direction. Rain running down a wall is well within that.

It is not rated for submersion or for direct pressure washing. Keep a hose off it when you clean the wall.

Mounted under an eave the fixture stays largely dry and will last longer. On an exposed wall the finish ages faster, and faster still near the coast.

Cast iron is heavy. Check that whatever you are fixing to will carry it. Solid brick or stone is fine. On timber cladding, fix into a stud or a batten rather than into the boards alone.

Sizes, Finishes and Light Output

The 9.4 in shade suits a single door or a side gate. The 11.4 in shade covers a double door or a garage front.

Antique silver reads as a weathered, aged metal. Black is flat and modern and disappears against a dark wall.

Output is 1400 lumens at 4500K. That is a neutral white, brighter and crisper than indoor warm light, which is what you want on a driveway.

The beam spreads across 180 degrees, so one fixture covers a wide doorway. Rated life is around 30,000 hours.

The two shade angles look different from the ground. A straight shade reads as a plain disc from below. A tilted shade shows its curve, which suits a wall you approach from the side rather than head on.
