Modern Gold Pendant Light with a Mirrored Molten Shade

Most pendant lights are decided by their shade, and most shades are a shape you can name: a dome, a cone, a globe. This one is not. The surface is deliberately irregular, so no two views of it are quite the same and the reflection it throws back changes as you move around the room. That makes it a difficult fixture to ignore, which is either exactly what you want or exactly what you do not.

How a Mirrored Pendant Light Behaves When Lit

The mirror metallic finish is not fully opaque. Switched off it reads as solid polished metal, but with the bulb in it the light finds the thinner areas of the moulding and pushes through in bright irregular patches. The effect on a ceiling is closer to firelight than to a lamp: uneven, warm and moving as you walk past it.

That has a practical consequence worth planning for. This is an ambient and decorative fixture rather than a task light. Over a dining table it lights the table beautifully and the room around it patchily. If the room has no other light source, put this one on a dimmer and add something else for the corners, rather than expecting it to carry the whole space on its own.

Picking a Size for a Table or an Island

The four diameters are 7, 11, 15 and 18.9 inches, and they are not interchangeable. The 7 inch is a small accent, and works best hung in a group of three over an island or a run of counter. The 11 inch is the general purpose size for a bedside, a hallway or a small round table.

The 15 and 18.9 inch versions are statement pieces and need the space to earn it. As a rough guide, a single pendant over a dining table looks right at roughly a third of the table width, so a 60 inch table takes the 18.9 inch comfortably while a 40 inch table does not. The cord is 59 inches and adjustable, so the drop height is the easy part to fix on the day.

Choosing Between Gold, Rose Gold, Silver and Grey

The finish decides the colour of the light as much as the colour of the shade. Gold and rose gold warm the beam and push the room towards amber, which suits timber, brick and a warm white bulb. Silver keeps the light neutral and reads cooler and more industrial, and it is the finish that disappears most easily into a white or grey scheme.

Smoky grey sits between the two. It is the least reflective of the four, so it holds its shape as an object rather than dissolving into whatever it is reflecting, and it is the safest choice in a room that already has a lot going on. All four take the same E26 or E27 bulb, so you can change the character of the light later without changing the fixture.
