Japanese Washi Paper Globe Pendant Light Rice Paper Lantern

Paper has been used for lantern shades in Japan for centuries for a reason that has nothing to do with cost: nothing else diffuses light as gently. A glass shade still has a bright spot where the bulb sits behind it. A paper one spreads the light through the fibre itself, so the whole surface lights up at roughly the same brightness and the sphere reads as a single soft object.

What Washi Paper Does That Glass and Fabric Cannot

Washi is made from long plant fibres rather than short wood pulp, which is why it can be thin enough to pass light and still strong enough to stretch over a frame. Light entering the sheet scatters between those fibres before it leaves, so it emerges spread out in every direction rather than passing straight through.

The visible result is a globe with no hot spot and no glare, lit evenly from pole to pole. You can look directly at it from across a room without discomfort. The thin ribs of the frame show through as faint lines, which is part of the character of the object rather than a flaw - it tells you at a glance that the shade is paper over a structure and not a moulded plastic sphere.

Choosing a Diameter, from Bedside to Room Scale

Eleven sizes cover a wide range of uses. At the smaller end, an 11.8 or 15.7 inch globe works over a bedside, in a hallway, or grouped in threes at different heights. These read as a light fitting.

From roughly 23.6 inches upward the globe stops being a fitting and starts being an element of the room. Over a dining table or in the middle of a living space, a large paper sphere is a piece of soft geometry as much as a light source, and it works as well switched off in daylight as it does lit at night. Because paper is light, even the largest sizes weigh very little, so scale here is not limited by what the ceiling can carry.

Wire Color, Ceilings and Looking After Paper

The suspension wire comes in white or black. White disappears against a pale ceiling and leaves the globe apparently floating; black draws a deliberate line from ceiling to shade and suits a room where other fixtures are dark. On a sloped or vaulted ceiling the black wire tends to look more intentional, since the line is visible against the slope either way.

Paper shades are best kept away from damp rooms and from anything that would knock them. Dust comes off with a dry brush or a light pass from a vacuum at low suction; they should not be wiped with a damp cloth. Pairing the fixture with a low-wattage LED keeps heat inside the globe down, which is good practice with any paper shade.
