Milk Glass Globe Wall Sconce with Metal Arm Three Finishes

Opal glass is the quiet workhorse of wall lighting. It hides the filament completely, which is the single biggest thing separating a sconce you can sit beside from one you have to angle away from. A clear globe at eye height puts a hot spot in your field of view every time you look up. A milk glass one turns the same bulb into a soft sphere, and that is why the material has outlasted every trend it has been through.

Fitting a Globe Wall Sconce Beside a Mirror

A pair either side of a mirror is the arrangement this shape is built for, and it beats a single fixture overhead for one practical reason. Light coming from above drops shadows into your eye sockets and under your chin. Light arriving from both sides at roughly face height fills those shadows in, which is why theatre mirrors have always been lit this way.

Mount them around 60 to 66 inches from the floor and roughly 30 to 36 inches apart on a standard vanity, adjusting so the globes land near eye level for whoever uses the room most. The backplate is 6 inches across, so check that against the width of the wall between mirror and cabinet before committing to the position.

Matte Black, Brass or Chrome

The three finishes change the fixture more than the photographs suggest. Matte black draws a hard outline against a pale wall and reads as graphic and modern. Brass warms up next to timber and terracotta and takes on more of a period feel. Chrome does the least talking of the three and disappears into a bathroom already full of polished fittings.

The usual advice is to match the sconce to the tapware, and it is reasonable advice, but it is not a rule. Deliberately mixing a black sconce into a brass bathroom works when the black also appears somewhere else in the room, on a shower frame or a mirror surround. What rarely works is one lone finish with nothing to answer it.

Hardwiring, Ratings and Bulb Choice

This is a hardwired fixture with no cord or plug, so it needs an existing wall box or a new one run by an electrician. That is the trade for the clean look - nothing is visible except the backplate. It is rated for dry indoor locations, which covers bedrooms, hallways and the walls of a normally ventilated bathroom, but not a position inside a shower enclosure.

The socket is a standard E26 rated to 60 watts and no bulb is supplied. Because the milk glass diffuses everything, bulb shape barely matters, but colour temperature does. A warm bulb keeps the opal looking creamy and soft. A cool one turns the same globe faintly blue and clinical, which suits a working bathroom and undercuts a bedroom.
