LED Wall Sconce That Lights the Wall, Not Your Eyes

This sconce is a polished metal dome held clear of a matching backplate. The LED sits behind the dome and points at the wall, not at you. What you see is a ring of soft light around a mirrored ball. There is no visible bulb and nothing to look into. The dome reflects the room, so it reads as a small metal sphere by day and a halo at night. Two diameters are offered, 3.9 in and 6.3 in, in gold, black or silver. The LED is built in.

Almost every wall light points at the room. This one points at the wall. A mirrored dome sits proud of its backplate and the LED hides behind it. Light escapes around the edge and lands on the wall as a soft ring. From a chair you see the ring and the dome, never the source. It is the least glaring way to put light on a wall, and it works at eye level where most sconces do not.

How the Halo Effect Works

The dome is solid and opaque. It blocks the LED completely from the front.

The gap between the dome and the backplate is where the light gets out. It spreads onto the wall in a ring.

That ring is brightest close to the fixture and fades outward. It gives the dome a lit outline without any glare.

Because the light bounces off your wall first, the colour of the wall changes the result. A warm white wall gives a warmer halo than a cool grey one.

The gap between the dome and the plate is fixed. There is nothing to adjust, so the halo is the same on every wall it goes on. What changes is the wall itself, and how much of the light it gives back.

A Mirror by Day, a Light by Night

Switched off, the dome is a polished sphere. It picks up the window, the furniture and the room around it.

That means the fixture is never a dead black spot on a wall. It stays interesting with the light off.

The three finishes behave differently. Gold reflects warm and reads soft. Silver is a bright mirror. Black is darker and shows only a faint reflection.

All three throw the same halo once lit. Pick on how the dome should read during the day.

Two Sizes and Where to Use Them

The 3.9 in dome is small enough to run in a line along a corridor or up a stairwell.

The 6.3 in dome carries a room on its own. Above a bedhead or beside a fireplace it works as a single feature.

Mixing the two sizes on one wall is a common arrangement. A large dome with a small one below it reads as a deliberate pair.

The LED is built in and rated for around 50,000 hours. There is no bulb to buy and nothing to replace.

Mounted close to a corner the halo will run onto the return wall. That reads well on a plain corner and badly against a busy one. Leave a clear span either side of the fixture if you can.
