Angled Spot Pendant Light with an Adjustable Cord Drop

A pendant that only points down lights whatever happens to be underneath it. That is fine over a dining table, where the table does not move. Over a kitchen island it is less useful, because the part you work on is rarely the part directly below the light. This shade tilts in its strap, so you aim it at the job instead.

Tilting the Shade to Aim the Light

The shade hangs in a metal strap that loops over the top of it. A knob on each side lets the cylinder rotate.

Loosen it, swing the shade to the angle you want, and it holds there.

Hung straight down, it behaves like an ordinary spot pendant with a tight pool of light.

Tilted, the pool moves sideways and stretches into an oval. Over an island that covers more of the working surface.

The shade is white inside. That reflects more light forward than a dark lining would, so tilting does not cost you brightness.

Setting the Cord Drop for Your Ceiling

The cord adjusts at the ceiling rose rather than being fixed at one length.

That matters because the right drop depends on your ceiling, not on the fixture. A high ceiling needs a longer cord to bring the light down into the room.

Over a kitchen island, hang the bottom of the shade around 30 to 36 in above the worktop. Low enough to light it, high enough to see across.

Over a dining table you can go a little lower, since nobody is standing.

In a row of three, set every cord to the same length and space them evenly along the island.

The cord colour is a separate choice. You can match it to the shade, or run black or white to match the ceiling.

Colours, Bulbs and Fitting

Seven shade colours are offered, from plain black and white through to pink, blue, green and yellow.

The muted colours suit a Scandinavian kitchen. Black or white disappear into a scheme and let the shape do the work.

Hanging three in different colours over one island works, provided the shape is identical, which it is.

The fixture takes an LED bulb, which is not included. A warm white bulb suits the painted shades best.

It is hardwired to a ceiling point. There is no plug and no inline switch.

The shade is metal and gets warm in use, so tilt it by the strap rather than the cylinder.
