Reading the shape of a fluted glass shade

The center of the shade is tightly ribbed and the rim breaks into soft waves, so the glass is thick in some places and thin in others. Lit from inside, those thickness changes show as bands of deeper and paler color, which is why the shade looks like a piece of glassware rather than a molded cover.

At 9 inches across and only 4.7 inches deep it is wide and shallow. That keeps it visually light, and it means the fitting does not interrupt a sightline across a room the way a tall pendant does. It also means the bulb is not hidden, so what you screw in matters.

Hanging one pendant or a group of three

As a single pendant it suits a hallway, a small entry, a nursery or a bedside drop, anywhere one warm point of light is the whole job. The 59 inch cord is trimmed at installation, so it adapts to almost any ceiling height.

The three-light versions run from one ceiling point. The long canopy strings the shades in a line, which is the right answer over a dining table or a kitchen bench. The round canopy gathers them into a triangle, better over a round table or in a corner where a line would look awkward.

Bulb choice and the 40 watt limit

The fitting takes an E26 or E27 screw bulb and is rated to a maximum of 40 watts. With LED that limit is generous rather than restrictive, since a 5 to 7 watt LED reaches the brightness of an old 60 watt lamp. Treat 40 watts as a hard ceiling if you are fitting an incandescent or halogen bulb, because the glass sits close to the source.

No bulb is supplied, which is deliberate here. Because the shade flares open, the bulb is visible from the sides and from below, so it becomes part of the look. A clear teardrop filament lamp suits the Art Nouveau reference. If the pendant hangs low over a seat, a frosted lamp is kinder on the eye. Dimming depends on the bulb and a compatible dimmer switch, as the fitting includes none.
