Cement Cone Pendant Light Glazed Rim for Kitchen Islands

Cement is an odd material for a light and that is most of the appeal. It is heavy, matt and completely opaque, so it gives you a hard edged pool of light and nothing escapes sideways. It also carries the marks of the mould it was cast in. Small pits, faint seam lines and slight colour shifts are normal and not faults. If you want a perfectly uniform shade, this is the wrong material.

The Glazed Rim Is the Colour

The body of the cone is raw grey cement on every version. What changes between them is a glazed band around the inside of the lower rim. Standing across the room you see grey. Sitting under it you see the colour.

That is a deliberate way to use colour in a kitchen. A fully coloured shade commits the whole room. A coloured rim only shows from certain angles, so the fixture reads as a neutral grey cone most of the time and as a shot of orange or blue when you look up.

Lit, the glaze does more work again. Light bounces off the coloured band on its way out, so the pool below picks up a warm or cool cast depending on which rim you chose. Orange warms the light. The two blues cool it.

Weight, Cord and Fitting

At about 4.5 lb this is heavier than a metal or glass pendant of the same size. That is fine on a sound ceiling box, but it is worth checking the box is properly fixed rather than clipped to a plasterboard sheet.

The cord is 47 in, close to 4 ft, which gives plenty of adjustment on a standard ceiling. Shorten it at the 4 in canopy to set the height you want. Over an island or a table, aim for 30 to 36 in of clearance above the surface.

The canopy and cord are plain black, which keeps the attention on the shade.

Bulbs and Where It Suits

The socket takes an E26 or E27 bulb and none is supplied. Because the cone is deep and opaque, the bulb is well hidden from anyone standing nearby. A plain LED is fine. Warm white around 2700K sits best against the grey cement.

The shade is small at 7 in, so hang two or three in a row over an island rather than relying on one. In a room with concrete, brick or raw timber the material choice makes sense on its own. In a soft traditional room it will look out of place.
