Wabi Sabi Pendant Light with an Asymmetric Dome Shade

Wabi sabi is the idea that something unfinished is more interesting than something perfect. This pendant takes that literally. The dome is not a clean half sphere. Its rim sweeps up on one side, so the shade looks caught mid movement. The surface is left rough rather than polished. Under the light it reads like poured stone. It is a plain shape done deliberately imperfectly, and that is what makes it worth hanging.

The Asymmetric Rim and What It Does

The rim rises on one side and falls on the other. The shade therefore always looks tilted.

That changes what you see from different seats at a table. From one chair the dome is deep. From the next it is shallow.

It also changes the light. More escapes from the low side, so the pool below is slightly off centre.

Hung in a row, turn each shade a little differently. The line then reads as handmade rather than repeated.

The shade is not delicate. Fiberglass and resin take a knock far better than glass or ceramic at this size, which matters on a wide shade hung over a table where chairs move.

Choosing a Width Over an Island or Table

The 7.9 in and 11.8 in shades suit a bedside or a narrow hallway. They are small and quiet.

Over a kitchen island, two or three of the 11.8 in or 15.7 in shades in a row is the usual arrangement. Space them roughly 30 in apart.

For a single pendant over a dining table, the 19.7 in and 23.6 in shades give the best balance. Leave about 30 in between the table top and the rim.

The 31.5 in shade needs a high ceiling. In a standard room it hangs too low and blocks the view across the table.

Finishes, Bulbs and Fitting

Three finishes are offered. White is smooth and pale. Dark grey is speckled and reads like concrete. Sand sits between them.

All three keep the textured surface. It is the texture, not the colour, that carries the style.

The socket takes a standard E26 or E27 bulb, not included. A warm 3000K bulb suits the raw finish. The inside of the shade is pale, so it spreads the light well.

The cord adjusts from 19.7 in to 59.1 in at the canopy. It shortens easily but cannot be extended, so measure a high ceiling first.

The inside face of the shade is smooth and pale on all three finishes. That is what spreads the light evenly. The texture you can see is on the outside only, so it does not break up the beam.
