Fluted Ceramic Pendant Light White Ribbed Teardrop Shade

Fluting is one of the oldest tricks in decorative work: cut a series of parallel grooves into a curved surface and it stops reading as a blank shape. Each ridge catches the light and each groove holds a shadow, so the form describes itself. On a white ceramic shade that is the whole design, and it is why the pendant still has presence in a room where everything else is plain.

How the Ribbed Surface Reads in Daylight and at Night

Unlit and in daylight, the flutes do all the work. Light from a window rakes across the ridges and creates a regular pattern of bright lines and soft shadows down the length of the shade, so a plain white object gains depth and texture without any color at all.

Lit at night the effect reverses. The ceramic is opaque, so the shade is not glowing - it is being lit from below by the bounce off whatever surface is beneath it. The undersides of the ridges pick that up and the shadows deepen. The shade looks quite different in the evening from how it looks at midday, which is unusual for an opaque fixture and is worth knowing before you choose where to hang it.

Single Pendant or a Cluster

As a single pendant this is a quiet, narrow fixture. Over a bench, a bedside or a small table it lights the surface below and stays out of the way. In the smaller diameters it is discreet enough to use in a row without the row becoming the subject of the room.

The cluster configurations are a different proposition. Hung at staggered lengths, five or seven of the teardrops together read as a single sculptural group rather than as several lights, and the effect scales up quickly - the twelve and eighteen light versions are stairwell and double-height fixtures. Clusters need clearance on all sides and a ceiling point that can take the combined weight.

Bulb Bases, Ceilings and Handling Ceramic

Two socket sizes are used across the range: E12 candelabra on the smaller shades and E26 on the larger ones. Check which applies to the size you are ordering before buying bulbs, since they are not interchangeable. A warm-white LED suits the white ceramic; a cool one makes it look grey.

The fixture mounts to flat, sloped or vaulted ceilings. Ceramic is heavier and more brittle than metal or resin, so it is worth supporting the shade during installation rather than letting it hang on the cord while you work, and worth checking the ceiling fixing is solid before you let go of it.
