Clear Glass Bell Pendant Light Black Fitting for Kitchen Islands

Clear glass is the safest shade you can buy. It never dates, it never fights the rest of the room, and it lets a kitchen keep its daylight feel after dark. The catch is that it puts the bulb on display. Get the bulb right and the fixture looks considered. Get it wrong and you have a bare lamp behind glass. Everything below is about getting it right.

How a Bell Shade Spreads the Light

A bell flares outward at the bottom. That shape throws light wide rather than straight down. Over a kitchen island it covers the full width of the bench instead of one bright spot in the middle.

Because the glass is clear, light also passes through the sides. The fixture lights the room as well as the bench. That is the difference between this and a metal shade. A metal shade gives you a hard edged pool. This gives you a soft one with the room lit around it.

The fitting above the shade is black and turned, with a ball and a collar stacked above the glass. It gives the pendant a bit of weight at the top so the bell does not look like it is floating on the cord.

Choosing a Bulb You Want to Look At

The socket is E26 or E27 and no bulb is included. Since the bulb is visible, its shape is part of the design. A long filament tube or a large globe both suit the bell. A small plain bulb looks lost inside an 8 in shade.

Warm white around 2700K is the right colour here. Clear glass does nothing to soften a cool bulb, so a 4000K lamp will read harsh. If the pendant hangs at eye level across a bench, pick a bulb with a frosted or coated finish. It cuts the glare without changing the look much.

Hanging Height and Fitting

Hang the bottom of the shade 30 to 36 in above the bench. Lower than that and it blocks the view across the kitchen. Higher and the light spreads too thin to be useful for prep work.

The shade is 8 in wide, so two of these suit an island up to about 6 ft and three suit a longer one. Keep 24 to 30 in between centres. The fixture hardwires to a ceiling box and is rated for 110V-120V as well as 220V-240V. It weighs about 3.5 lb. The socket is rated to 150W and above, so almost any LED is well within range.
