Clear Fluted Glass Cylinder Pendant Light with a Brass Fitting

Clear glass is the hardest shade material to use well, because it hides nothing. Fluting is the traditional fix. Pressing vertical ribs into the glass bends the light as it leaves, so instead of one glaring filament you see a ring of soft vertical highlights. That is why this shape has been made the same way for a century and why it still works over a table.

Clear or green glass and what changes

Clear glass gives you the most light for the bulb you fit and lets the fluting show as bright, defined lines. In a room with pale walls and timber it almost disappears when off, which is what you want if the pendant should not compete with anything else.

Green tints everything passing through it and reads as a decorative object even unlit. Against panelled walls, dark leather or warm plaster it looks deliberate. It also cuts the output slightly, so if the pendant is lighting a work surface rather than a dining table, clear is the more practical choice.

One pendant or a three-head cluster

A single head suits a bedside, a hallway, or a spot above a console where one warm point of light is all the job needs. At just under seven inches across it is a modest fitting on its own.

The three-head versions run from one ceiling point, which means a single wiring job for three shades. The round cluster groups them tightly and works over a round table or in a corner. The long version spreads them in a line, which is the right answer above a rectangular table, a bench or a sofa. Worth checking your ceiling point before choosing: the three-head versions share one canopy, so they need a single fixing rather than three, which is usually simpler but does fix the spacing between the shades.

Bulb choice, drop length and fitting

The cord adjusts to 59.05 inches and is trimmed on installation, so the same fitting works under a low or a high ceiling. Over a table, leave roughly 30 to 34 inches of clear space beneath the shade. In a cluster, stagger the three drops by four to six inches so the group reads as composed rather than accidental.

It takes one E26 or E27 screw bulb, not supplied. A clear filament lamp is the natural partner, since the fluted glass exists to break that filament into repeats and a fully frosted bulb loses most of the effect. There is no dimmer in the fitting, so dimming means a dimmable lamp on a compatible switch. The 3.94 inch plate covers a standard ceiling point.
