Brass Semi Flush Mount Ceiling Light Glass Panel Scalloped Shade

Panelled glass in a metal frame is an old idea and it solves a real problem. A single moulded shade is one surface, so it lights evenly and looks flat. A panelled shade is a set of small surfaces with lines between them. Each panel lights on its own and the frame draws dark lines across the glow. From below you get pattern instead of a plain lit disc, which is a lot for a fixture only 9 in across.

Four Shade Shapes and What Changes

The tall caged dome is the deepest. Its panels curve up into a rounded top held by a cage of brass strips, and it reads most like an old lantern. The rosette dome is a similar depth with small cast flower details set into the frame, which is the most decorative of the four.

The wide scallop is shallow and flares out, so it covers the widest area and sits closest to the ceiling. The flared scallop is between the two, opening out to a wavy rim. All four are 9 in wide and 9 in high overall and use the same brass canopy.

Where a 9 in Fixture Belongs

This is a small light. In a large living room it will look lost and it will not light the space. Its home is a hallway, a landing, a walk in wardrobe, a small entry or a bedroom where it works alongside lamps rather than instead of them.

Along a corridor, two or three spaced evenly beats one in the middle. The fixture drops only 9 in from the ceiling, so it clears a standard 8 ft ceiling with room to spare. The canopy is 5 in and covers a normal ceiling box.

It also suits a room with a decorative ceiling. The brass canopy has a stepped profile that sits well against moulded plaster or a timber lining, where a flat modern disc would look out of place.

Bulbs and What to Expect from the Light

The glass panels are frosted, so the bulb never shows as a hard point. That means you can use a plain LED without worrying about how it looks. The socket is E26 or E27 and no bulb is supplied.

Warm white around 2700K is the right choice. It keeps the brass looking like brass rather than washing it grey, and it suits the traditional shape. Do not expect a lot of output. Frosted panels in a brass frame absorb some light, so this is a fixture for atmosphere and gentle general lighting. It is rated for 110V-120V and 220V-240V, and weighs about 2.5 lb.
