Mounting is flush to the ceiling. The narrow collar means the fixture needs a flat mounting surface; on a sloped or heavily textured ceiling, check that the collar can seat evenly before committing to a position.

Ceramic is heavier and more brittle than the painted steel used in most fittings at this size, so handle the shade by the body rather than the rim during installation, and keep the fixing screws snug rather than overtightened. The 2.5 pound weight is carried by the ceiling box, not by the ceramic itself, so there is nothing unusual about the installation beyond taking care with the glazed surface while you are working above your head.
