Bauhaus Glass Pendant Light with a Colored Disc Shade

This glass pendant light puts a flat, wide disc of colored glass under a short enamelled lamp holder, so the fitting reads as two simple shapes stacked together. The glass is deep enough to hide the bulb from most angles while still throwing light down onto a table or counter. Pick the glass in green, orange, white or frosted green, and the holder in a matching or contrasting color. Two sizes are offered, 9.8 or 13.8 inches across, in a hardwired version or a plug-in version with a much longer cord.

Most pendant shades are tall and hide the bulb inside a cone or a globe. This one does the opposite. It is a shallow disc, wide rather than deep, so it behaves more like a small reflector than a shade. The result is a tight pool of light directly underneath and very little spill sideways, which is why it suits a spot you want to pick out rather than a room you want to fill.

Picking a size for a glass pendant light

The small shade is 9.84 inches across and the large is 13.77 inches. Over a breakfast bar or a narrow island, two or three of the small ones spaced evenly usually look better than one large one, because the repetition does the work and each seat gets its own pool of light.

The large size is the right call when the pendant is on its own, over a round dining table or a hall table where it has to hold the space by itself. A single small disc in the middle of a large room tends to look lost, and no amount of extra brightness fixes a scale problem.

Combining glass and lamp holder colors

The glass and the holder are chosen separately, which is the interesting part of this fitting. A matching pair, olive glass on an olive holder, is the quiet option and reads almost as a single moulded object. It suits a room where the light should not be the loudest thing in it.

Contrasting pairs behave like a piece of graphic design. Olive glass on a red holder, or green glass on a terracotta one, puts two saturated colors next to each other at eye level. That is a deliberate choice and worth making only if the rest of the room is calm enough to carry it.

Hardwired or plug-in, and the G9 bulb

The hardwired version comes with a 59.06 inch drop and connects to a ceiling point through the 3.94 inch plate. The plug-in version has a 177.17 inch cord, which is long enough to run from a socket, up to a ceiling hook, and back down over a table. That is the one to choose in a rental, or anywhere there is no ceiling point where you want the light.

The fitting takes a single G9 bulb, which is the small two-pin capsule type, and it is not included. G9 is worth knowing about because the capsule is physically tiny and sits well inside the disc, so it stays out of sight. Whether the light dims depends on the bulb you buy and the switch it is wired to, since there is no dimmer in the fixture. This is an IP20 fitting for dry rooms, so it should not go in a bathroom or outdoors.
