Amber Glass Pendant Light for Dining Room Table

A dining table is lit from one place only, so the shade over it does more work than any other light in the house. Clear glass looks smart but puts a bare filament at eye level. Opaque metal hides the bulb and throws a hard circle on the table. Tinted glass sits between the two. You still see the shape of the bulb, but the glare is gone and the light lands warm.

What the Cognac Tint Actually Does

Cognac is a warm brown amber, the color of the drink. Light passing through it comes out warmer than the bulb behind it. A neutral white bulb reads warm. A warm white bulb reads warmer still. This is the easiest way to get a soft table light without hunting for a special bulb, and it works with whatever you already have in the drawer.

The tint also does something for the room in daylight. Clear glass over a table is close to invisible when it is off. Amber glass is not. It reads as a warm shape against the wall behind it and holds its place in the room. On a table that only gets used in the evening, that is worth having.

Picking a Size and a Layout

Six shade sizes are offered, and the shape changes with them. The smaller shades are round globes. The wider ones flatten into an urn. The 12.5 in is a tall cylinder. Total drop runs from about 13 in on the small urn to 19.5 in on the cylinder, measured from the ceiling cap to the bottom of the glass.

One large pendant suits a round table or a square one. A row of two or three small shades suits a long table or a kitchen island, and looks better if you keep the same size across the row. Hang it high enough that the glass lights the table without blocking the face of the person across from you, and shorten the cord to suit.

Wiring, Bulbs and the Cord

The cord is 59 in, which is nearly 5 ft, and that is enough for a standard ceiling. It hangs from a round 4 in canopy. Voltage is listed as 110V-120V and 220V-240V, so it runs on US mains. It is a hardwired fixture and mounts to a normal ceiling box.

The base is E26, the standard screw fitting, and no bulb is included. That is a good thing here. A clear globe filament bulb suits the amber glass and is what the product photos show. A frosted bulb will soften it further if the filament is too much. LED, incandescent and fluorescent all fit, so you pick the brightness yourself.
