Wood and Aluminum Dome Pendant Light for Kitchen Islands

Depth is what separates a dome from a cone. A deep shade hides the bulb and pushes light down in a tight column. This one is only 5.5 inches deep against an 11.8 inch width, so the bulb sits near the open edge and the light leaves at a wide angle. Over an island that is exactly what you want, because a single fitting covers most of the work surface instead of lighting one bright circle in the middle.

Spacing a modern wood pendant over an island

For an island up to about four feet long, one pendant centered on it is enough. Beyond that, two spaced evenly will light the surface far better than one larger fitting, and at 11.8 inches these are small enough that a pair does not look heavy.

Leave roughly 30 to 36 inches between the counter and the bottom edge of the shade. Because the dome is shallow, the bulb is visible from a low angle, so err toward the higher end of that range if people will be sitting at the island rather than standing at it. One more thing worth planning before the electrician arrives: mark the ceiling points against the finished island position, not the plan. Islands move an inch or two during a kitchen fit more often than anyone admits, and a pendant that is off center by two inches is obvious for the life of the kitchen.

How the six painted finishes behave

White is the default for a reason. The matte finish keeps it from looking plastic, and against white cabinetry the wood collar reads as the only detail, which is a calm result in a busy kitchen.

Grey and black both hold their own against timber and concrete, and black in particular stops the fitting disappearing into a pale ceiling. Pink, green and blue are the ones that commit. They work best in a room with plain surfaces, where the pendant is allowed to be the single piece of color.

Cord length, bulbs and wiring

The standard cord is 39.4 inches and a longer one can be ordered, which matters more here than on most pendants. Kitchens often have higher ceilings than dining rooms, and a cord that is too short leaves the fitting stranded up near the plaster where it lights nothing useful.

It takes an E26 or E27 screw bulb, not included. Because the shade is shallow and open, a frosted or opal bulb is more comfortable than a clear one, especially over a seating area. The pendant is hardwired, so a permanent installation needs an electrician. Assembly is straightforward, and both the aluminum and the wood should be cleaned with a soft dry cloth.
