Wood Semi Flush Mount Ceiling Light with White Glass Globe

Hallways rarely have room for a pendant. Drop anything more than a few inches and somebody tall will find it with their head. A semi flush mount solves that. It sits close to the ceiling but still shows a shade, so it does not read as a bare downlight. This one puts a flat wood disc against the ceiling and hangs a single white glass globe just below it. On the larger size the whole thing stands 7 in deep.

What the Wood Disc and Glass Globe Do

The disc is the working part. It sits between the bulb and the ceiling and stops light from washing straight up. Instead the light hits the underside of the wood and comes back down warmer than it went up.

That is why the fixture reads soft even with a plain bulb behind it. The grain shows clearly when the light is on and the disc glows around its rim.

The globe below is white glass. It hides the filament completely, so you can look at the fixture from a doorway without squinting. Between the two, no part of the bulb is ever visible from below.

The globe is fixed rather than hinged. To change the bulb you unscrew the globe from the wood disc.

Fitting It in a Hallway or a Small Room

Measure the ceiling height first. In a hallway under 8 ft, the smaller size is the safer choice at 4.5 in deep. The larger one is 7 in deep and 11 in across, which suits a landing, a small bedroom or a study.

In a long hallway, two of these spaced evenly beat one in the middle. The light from a single fixture falls away quickly and leaves both ends dim.

It mounts to a standard ceiling box on a 4 in canopy. The wood is a natural finish, so the tone shifts a little from piece to piece.

It suits a plain ceiling best. Against a busy cornice the round disc reads as clutter rather than a feature.

G9 Bulbs and Wiring

The socket is a G9, which is the small two pin base rather than a screw. G9 LED bulbs are easy to find and run cool. No bulb comes with the fixture.

Pick a warm white near 2700K. The wood is a warm material and a cool bulb makes it look grey. Brightness around 400 to 600 lumens is plenty for a hallway.

The fixture is hardwired and rated 110V-120V and 220V-240V, so it runs on a US 120V circuit. There is no plug and no switch on the fixture itself.
