Recessed Indoor Stair Lighting with a Motion Sensor
A compact stair light that sets flush into the wall beside each tread, measuring 3.4 inches square and projecting barely over an inch. An angled internal shield sends the light downward onto the step and keeps the aperture itself from glaring, so a lit flight never turns into a row of bright dots. Sensor versions detect movement out to 19.7 feet and bring the light up ahead of you. It draws 1.5 watts, runs on anything from 85 to 265 volts, and comes in white, black, silver or gold.

A staircase is the one place in a house where getting the lighting wrong has a physical consequence. What matters is not how much light there is but where the edge of each tread falls, because that edge is the only thing a foot is aiming for. Small fittings set into the wall beside the steps put light exactly there and nowhere else, which is why they beat a bright ceiling fixture every time.
Spacing Recessed Stair Lighting Indoors
Each fitting lights more than the tread immediately below it, so there is no need to put one on every step. On a standard flight, one light every third tread gives continuous coverage without the result looking like runway markers. On a wide or curved staircase you may want one every second tread, and on a short flight of four or five steps two fittings are usually plenty.
Height is worth more thought than spacing. Somewhere between 6 and 10 inches above the tread puts the light where it grazes the step without being at ankle height where it gets kicked. Set them all to the same height above their own tread rather than the same height above the floor, so the line of lights follows the stairs.
When a Motion Sensor Is Worth the Extra
The sensor versions read movement from 13.1 to 19.7 feet across a 120 degree arc, which is enough to pick someone up as they reach the bottom or top of a flight rather than halfway along it. That lead time is the whole point. A sensor that triggers when you are already on the third step has not helped.
Whether it earns its place depends on the household. On a landing between bedrooms, sensor units mean nobody hunts for a switch at two in the morning and nobody leaves the stairs lit all night. On a main staircase that is already switched with the hall, plain non-sensor units are simpler and there is nothing to false-trigger on a passing pet.
Finish, Output and Electrical Requirements
Four finishes are offered and the choice is mostly about how visible you want the fittings to be. White and silver disappear into pale plaster. Black reads as a deliberate detail on a dark wall. Gold is the one that makes the fitting an object rather than a service, which suits a timber-lined stairwell.
Each unit draws 1.5 watts and accepts anything from 85 to 265 volts, so it works on standard household supply without a separate transformer. Warm white at 3000K is the usual choice indoors. The rating is IP20, which means indoor use only - this is not a fitting for external steps or anywhere it will be rained on.
