A dark staircase outside is a real problem, and most lights make it worse. Put a bright lamp at the top and you walk down into your own shadow. This light solves it the other way round. The face is set back inside the housing, so the source is hidden and only the tread below is lit. You see the step, not the light.

Lighting Stairs Without Dazzle

The LED sits behind a recessed lip, so you never look straight at it.

Light leaves at a low angle and lands on the surface below.

That gives you a bright tread and a dark fixture.

Your eyes stay adjusted to the dark, which is the whole point.

Mount them about 8 to 12 in above the tread.

Higher than that and the pool of light spreads too thin.

On a long flight, one every third or fourth step is usually enough.

Stagger them on one side rather than lining both walls.

Along a path, space them so the pools just touch.

Set them all at the same height or the run will look crooked at night.

Measure from the tread rather than from the ground, because steps rise.

On a curved path, follow the inside edge so the pools overlap.

Choosing Between the Two Sizes

The 4.1 in size runs at 3W and covers 11 to 32 sq ft.

That suits a tight staircase or a narrow side path.

The 6.3 in size runs at 5W and covers 32 to 65 sq ft.

Use it on wide steps, a terrace edge or a longer run.

Both share the same square face and the same black finish.

Both mount flat on the wall rather than recessing into it.

Pick one size for a run. Mixed sizes look uneven at night.

The larger one is the safer choice if you are unsure.

The 3W version draws less and suits a run of many fittings on one circuit.

The 5W is the one to pick if it is doing the work alone.

Both give the same warm 3000K light, so mixing wattages still looks consistent.

Weather and Mounting

IP54 covers splashing water from any direction.

That is rain and spray rather than a pressure washer.

Mount it on a wall, not flat on the ground where water pools.

The body is aluminium and the diffuser is polycarbonate.

Polycarbonate takes a knock better than glass at ankle height.

At 1.2 lb it is light, so plugs into masonry are plenty.

It is hardwired, so run the cable before you finish the wall.

The LED is fixed at 3000K and cannot be swapped later.

The supplier lists CCC, CE, CQC and EMC certifications.

None of those are US marks, so check local requirements before installing.

The stated voltage range of 85 to 265V does cover US mains.
