Modern Wall Sconce with an Offset Acrylic Globe
This modern wall sconce is two circles that overlap: a round metal backplate flat against the wall and an opal acrylic globe sitting off to one side of it. The acrylic wraps the bulb completely, so the light comes out soft and even with no bright filament to look into. It is 4.9 inches across and projects very little, which makes it a sensible choice beside a bed or a mirror where a table lamp would be in the way. It is damp rated and comes in light yellow or creamy white.

A bedside lamp takes up the whole nightstand. A reading light on an arm has to be aimed. This sconce does neither: it goes on the wall, stays where it is put, and gives back the table surface underneath it. The trade-off is that you commit to a position, which is worth thinking about before anyone drills into the wall.
Mounting Height for a Bedside Wall Sconce
Beside a bed, the usual position puts the centre of the fixture around 30 to 36 inches above the mattress and roughly level with the shoulder of someone sitting up. Any higher and the light falls behind you rather than onto a book. Any lower and the globe sits in your eyeline when you lie down. Because the acrylic diffuses the light in every direction, exact aim matters less here than it would with a directional fitting.
Beside a mirror, mount two of them level with the eyes rather than above the glass. Light from the side fills in under the chin and around the eyes, which is what people actually want from a bathroom light, whereas a fitting above the mirror casts everything downward and puts shadows exactly where they are least useful.
What the Damp Rating Allows and What It Does Not
Damp rated means the fixture is built for humidity and occasional condensation, not for direct water. A bathroom wall, a covered porch, a laundry or a sheltered balcony are all inside that limit. Inside a shower enclosure, or anywhere spray reaches the fitting directly, is not. That would need a wet rated fixture and this one is not it.
In practice the damp rating is what makes this usable in the two rooms most sconces are ruled out of. It is worth checking your local wiring rules as well, because bathroom zones are regulated separately from the fixture's own rating, and an electrician will know which zone your wall falls into.
Bulb Choice and the Two Finishes
It takes a standard E26 or E27 bulb up to 40W and works with a dimmer, which is the combination you want for a bedside. Because the acrylic globe is opaque rather than clear, the shape of the bulb inside it does not show, so there is no reason to pay for a decorative filament type. A plain warm white LED is the sensible choice and will run cooler in an enclosed diffuser.
The two finishes differ only in the backplate and the tint of the globe. Light yellow is a soft butter tone that reads warm even before the light is on and suits plaster, timber and beige. Creamy white is closer to neutral and disappears against a white or pale grey wall, which is the better option when you want the light rather than the fixture to be the thing you notice.
