Barn Shade Pendant Light Metal 1-Light for Kitchen Island

The barn shade is one of the oldest shapes in lighting and it survived for a plain reason. A wide metal dome sends every bit of light downward and none of it sideways into a face. Factories used them because you could see the bench. Kitchens use them now for the same reason, and the shape has not needed changing since.

Why This Shape Works Over a Bench

The shade is 10.5 in wide and 8 in deep. Those two numbers do the work. The width spreads a pool of light wide enough for a chopping board and a bowl. The depth hides the bulb from anyone standing at the bench, so you get the light without the glare. A shallower shade would leave the bulb showing from across the room.

The inside of the shade is pale, and that matters more than the outside color. A pale lining bounces light back down instead of soaking it up, so the same bulb reads brighter under a barn shade than under a dark one. The color you pick shows on the outside, where it is decoration, not lighting.

Hanging One, Two or Three

At 10.5 in across, this is a mid size pendant. One on its own suits a small round table or a breakfast nook. Two or three in a line suit a standard kitchen island, and a row of three is the layout most of the product photos show. Keep the spacing even and the drop the same across the row.

The cord is 55 in of braided fabric, which is a little over 4.5 ft, and it hangs from a round 4 in canopy. That is enough drop for a normal ceiling and can be taken up if you want the shade to sit closer. The braid is part of the look here, so it is worth leaving some of it visible rather than hiding it all in the canopy.

Colors, Bulbs and Wiring

Seven colors are offered: gray, white, khaki, green, red, yellow and blue. The neutrals sit quietly in a kitchen that already has a lot going on. The reds, yellows and blues are the opposite and are meant to be the thing you notice, which is why they turn up in cafes and small restaurants.

The lamp holder is brass with a small knob on the side, and it takes an E26 bulb. No bulb is included. LED, incandescent and fluorescent all fit, and a warm filament bulb suits the brass. Voltage is listed as 110V-120V and 220V-240V, so it runs on US mains. It is a hardwired ceiling fixture and mounts to a standard box.
