Stacked Glass Table Lamp on a Slim Chrome Stem

Coloured glass behaves differently from a painted shade. The colour is in the material, not on the surface, so it changes as the light moves through it. Off, the shade reads as a solid block of colour. On, it goes translucent and warm, and the two stacked tiers glow at slightly different strengths because of how thick the glass is at each point.

How the Stacked Glass Tiers Shape the Light

The shade is built from two rounded tiers, the lower one wider than the upper.

Light travels through both. Where the glass is thicker, at the widest part of each tier, the colour reads deepest.

Where it is thinner, near the seam between them, the glass goes brighter and paler. That gives the shade a banded look when lit.

The shade is closed at the top, so most of the light comes out sideways and down.

On a bedside table that means a low warm spread rather than a beam. It lights the corner of the room without lighting the ceiling.

Three Light Modes and the In-Line Switch

The lamp runs three modes: white, warm and natural. You cycle through them from the in-line switch on the cable.

Warm suits evening use. It pushes the coloured glass further towards orange and red.

White is the coolest of the three and reads closest to daylight. It shows the true colour of the glass.

Natural sits between the two and is the most neutral for everyday use.

The switch sits on the cable rather than the lamp, so you do not have to reach past a hot shade to use it.

Choosing a Colour and Where to Stand It

The orange is the strongest of the four. It reads as a deep amber when lit and holds colour even switched off.

The pink is softer and turns almost coral under the warm mode.

The pale yellow is the lightest, and it goes closest to cream when lit.

The white version is the most neutral. It behaves like a conventional opal shade with a little more depth.

At 11.0 in high the lamp sits below eye level on most bedside tables, so you look at the glass rather than into the bulb.

Two in different colours read well at either end of a sideboard. The shape carries the pairing, so the colours do not need to match.

The chrome base is 7.1 in across and keeps the weight low. Even so, glass and a slim stem do not forgive knocks, so keep it back from the table edge.
