Dining Room Pendant Light with a Ribbed Glass Shade

This pendant hangs a ribbed glass shade on a long black cord. Fine vertical flutes run down the outside of the glass. They catch the light and turn the shade into a set of bright lines. The glass is tinted, so what comes through is already warm. There are four shade shapes and two glass colors to choose from. The cord is 59 in, which is long enough for a high ceiling. One standard E26 or E27 bulb fits, and none is included.

A dining table wants light that falls on the food and stays out of everybody's eyes. That is a narrow target. Hang the fixture too high and it lights the room instead of the table. Hang a clear shade too low and the person opposite is looking at a bulb. Ribbed glass buys you room to work with. It softens the bulb enough that you can hang the fixture low and keep the light where the plates are.

What the Ribbed Glass Does at Table Height

The flutes are moulded into the outside of the shade and run top to bottom. Each one is a shallow curve that bends light slightly outward. The result is a shade covered in narrow bands of bright and dim.

Sit under it and you get warm light on the table with no single hot point to look at. Stand back and the shade reads as texture, which is what stops a plain glass pendant from looking like a jar on a wire.

The tint does the rest. Cognac is the warmer of the two and pushes everything under it toward amber. Smoke gray is cooler and darker, and reads almost charcoal when the light is off.

Four Shade Shapes and Their Sizes

The barrel is the small one at 6.5 in wide and 6.5 in high. It suits a run of three over a narrow table or a kitchen bench.

The lantern is 9 in wide and 7.5 in high, with a squared shoulder. The rounded shade is the widest at 10 in across and 9.5 in high, and it throws the most light sideways.

The bottle is the tall one, 7 in wide and 12 in high. It hangs low and narrow, which works well over one end of a long table or beside a bed. Every shape uses the same cord, canopy and socket.

Hanging Height, Cord and Bulbs

The cord is 59 in and shortens at the canopy. That is a long drop, which is what you want in a room with a 9 ft or 10 ft ceiling. In a standard room you will be cutting most of it away.

Leave about 30 in between the table top and the bottom of the shade. For a run of three, space them 24 in to 30 in apart and keep the bottoms level.

The socket takes an E26 or E27 bulb and none is supplied. A warm white LED near 2700K suits both glass colors. The fixture is hardwired to a 4 in round canopy and rated 110V-120V and 220V-240V.
