Pendant Light for a Dining Room with a Planter Ring
This dining room pendant light is a wide ring with a downlight in the middle and a planter trough around it. The light points straight down at the table. The plants sit in the ring above it and trail over the outside edge. The ring is 15.7 in across and the fixture is 9.8 in deep. This is a proper dining pendant that happens to hold plants. The light is a downlight set in the underside of the ring, so it does what a dining pendant should and puts light on the table. The planter is the ring itself, a shallow trough running right around. Because the greenery sits above the light and outside it, nothing blocks the beam. At 15.7 in across it is a substantial object over a table.
How the Light and the Planter Share One Fixture
The downlight sits in the centre of the underside, facing the table.
The planter is a shallow trough around the outside of the ring.
The two never overlap, so the plants cannot shade the light.
Trailing plants fall over the outer rim and hang beside the fixture.
Seen from below you get a lit disc with a fringe of green around it.
From above, at standing height, you mostly see the plants.
Because the light is recessed into the underside, you do not see the lamp.
Looking up from a chair you see a lit disc, not a bright point.
That is what makes it comfortable over a table people sit at.
The planter trough is shallow, so use a light potting mix.
Getting the Drop Height Right
The cable adjusts up to 59 in and the maximum overall drop is 68.9 in.
Over a dining table, aim to leave clear space between the fixture and the tabletop.
Hang it too low and the ring blocks the view across the table.
Hang it too high and the downlight spreads out and loses its edge.
Remember the plants add length below the ring. Allow for how far they will trail.
The fixture is 9.8 in deep on its own before any planting.
A 15.7 in ring is wide, so centre it properly over the table.
An off centre pendant this size is obvious from anywhere in the room.
Over a round table it works particularly well, because the shapes match.
Check the ceiling fixing. With soil and water on board it gains weight.
Three Colours and Planting the Ring
The ring comes in white, green or black.
White keeps the fixture light and lets the plants carry the colour.
Green blends the ring into the planting so the whole thing reads as foliage.
Black gives the strongest outline and suits a darker room.
Trailing species are the natural fit. Ivy and string of pearls both hang well.
Keep it reachable. A planter over a dining table still needs watering.
The three colours change how much the fixture asserts itself.
In a small room white is the safe one.
Black over a pale table gives the strongest contrast.
Green is the least obvious once the planting fills in.
