Retro Gridded Glass Pendant Light Bell Shade for Dining Rooms

Coloured glass over a dining table is a commitment. It tints everything below it, including the food. That is why most people end up with clear or white. The trick with this shade is the grid. The pressed pattern scatters the light, so the colour reads on the shade itself rather than pouring down onto the table. You get the colour where you can see it and cleaner light where you eat.

What the Gridded Glass Does

The glass is pressed with a fine square grid on the surface. Each square acts as a small lens. Instead of one smooth pool of light you get a scatter of bright points. It is the same idea as old factory prismatic glass, at a smaller scale.

Turn it on in a dim room and the shade lights up like a lantern. Turn it on in daylight and it reads as a solid coloured bell. Both looks are useful. The shade does most of its work in the evening.

The glass is pressed rather than blown, so the grid is crisp and even all the way round the bell. The brass socket housing above it picks up the warm tones in the red and orange glass.

How Many to Hang Over a Table

The shade is only 5.5 in wide. One on its own over a six seat table will look lost. These are made to hang in groups. Two suit a small table, three suit a standard dining table and four suit a long one.

Space them 18 to 24 in apart and hang the bottom of the shade 30 to 36 in above the table top. The overall drop is 39 in, which works on a standard ceiling. Mixing the three colours across a run is an option, and the photos show it done that way.

Bulbs, Fitting and the Three Colours

The socket takes an E26 or E27 bulb and none is supplied. A warm filament style bulb suits the retro shape. Keep the wattage modest. The shade is small and open at the bottom, so a very bright bulb will glare at anyone across the table.

The fixture hardwires to a ceiling box and is rated for 110V-120V and 220V-240V, so it runs on a US circuit. It weighs about 3.5 lb, which is light for a glass pendant. The three colours are red, blue and orange. Red and orange read warm against timber. Blue is the cooler one and stands out against a pale wall.
