Colored paper behaves differently from colored glass. Glass tints the light passing through it and stays dark elsewhere. Paper takes the color into the fibre itself, so the whole shade turns that color when lit and glows as a solid block of it. A red paper lamp does not throw red light across a room, it becomes a red object with warm light around it.

Choosing from seven colors

White is the traditional choice and behaves as a pure diffuser, giving the most light and the least presence. It suits a bedroom where the lamp should be quiet, and it is the option that works in any room regardless of what else is there.

Orange, red, green and yellow are the ones that commit. They read as strong, saturated objects even unlit, and they cut the light output noticeably compared with white. The two-tone black and white options are the middle ground, graphic in daylight and softer once lit. Pick against your wall color, since a paper lamp sits close to the surface behind it.

What the tripod legs change

Raising the shade on three wire legs does two useful things. Light escapes underneath as well as through the paper, so a little of it lands directly on the surface below and the lamp reads as brighter than a shade sitting flat.

It also lightens the object visually. A 10 inch paper shade placed directly on a table looks solid and heavy. The same shade on thin wire legs looks like it is hovering, and the gap underneath gives the eye somewhere to rest. That is the whole reason for the design. The legs are thin enough that they read as a line drawing rather than a stand, which keeps a small table from feeling crowded.

Bulbs, power and caring for the shade

It takes an E27 screw bulb at 6 to 10 watts and LED is the right choice, not just for efficiency but because paper sits close to the lamp and LED runs far cooler than an incandescent of the same brightness. A warm 2700K bulb suits the paper, and on the colored shades it deepens the tone rather than washing it out.

This is a corded plug-in lamp rather than a rechargeable one, so it needs a socket within reach. Clean the paper with a soft brush or a vacuum on its lowest setting and never a damp cloth, since water marks paper permanently. At around 2.2 pounds it is easy to move but also easy to knock, so give it a stable surface.
