Adjustable Recessed Downlight LED Spotlight with Aluminium Housing

Fixed downlights make one assumption: that the interesting thing in the room is on the floor. Often it is not. It is a painting, a bookcase, a splashback or a kitchen island offset from the ceiling grid. A head that rotates through 360 degrees and folds out of its housing lets a single fitting be either a general downlight or a directed spot, decided after the ceiling is already cut.

Semi-Recessed Versus Fully Recessed Fittings

A fully recessed downlight hides entirely in the ceiling and can only ever point straight down. A surface mounted spot sits proud, aims anywhere, and is always visible. This fitting sits between the two: the body recesses into the void while the head remains outside it, so it keeps most of the neat appearance and gains all of the aiming.

That also makes it forgiving of a ceiling grid that does not match the furniture. Downlights get set out to a plan and rooms get rearranged afterwards. When the sofa moves and the reading light is now two feet off, a fixed fitting is a plastering job and an adjustable one is a two second correction.

Aiming an LED Recessed Spotlight Well

For artwork, the useful angle is around 30 degrees off vertical. Steeper than that and the frame casts a shadow down its own face. Shallower and you get a reflection bouncing straight back at anyone standing in front of it. Thirty degrees is the compromise galleries settled on and it holds up at home.

For a work surface, aim from the front rather than directly overhead so your own body does not block the light. For a wall wash, place the fittings a foot or so out from the wall and tilt them toward it - too close and you get a scalloped arc, too far and it stops being a wash and becomes a row of spots.

Output, Dimming and Colour Temperature

Three configurations are available: a 3.3 inch 7 watt unit and two 3.9 inch versions at 10 and 12 watts. For accent lighting, a lower wattage aimed precisely does more than a high one thrown everywhere. Reserve the 12 watt for high ceilings or for spots that have real work to do over a bench.

The LED is dimmable, which matters more on an adjustable fitting than a fixed one. A spot aimed at a wall at full output can be brighter than the room around it and pull every eye to it. Being able to bring it down until it just lifts the surface is what separates accent lighting from a searchlight. Warm, natural and cool white options are offered, and the body is aluminium in black or white.
