Ribbed Glass Wall Sconce for Bathroom Vanity in Brass Finish

Vanity lighting fails in a specific way: a bare or clear shade at mirror height puts the filament directly in your eyeline, and every glance in the mirror catches it. Fluting solves that without losing the light. The ribs refract the source across the whole surface of the glass, so the shade glows evenly instead of showing a single bright point behind it.

Mounting Up or Down From One Fitting

The stem and backplate are symmetrical, so the fixture can be installed with the shade above the arm or below it. Facing up it throws light onto the ceiling and gives a softer, more ambient result, which suits a hallway or a bedroom.

Facing down it puts light onto the basin and the face, which is what a working bathroom wants. Because the decision is made at installation rather than at purchase, the same sconce can be moved between rooms later and re-oriented to suit. It is worth deciding before wiring, though, since the cable entry sits behind the backplate and is easier to position first time.

One, Two or Three Lights

The single light is 5 inches wide by 9 inches high and is the one to flank a mirror in a pair. Mounted either side at roughly eye level it lights the face evenly from both directions, which is the arrangement that avoids shadows under the chin and is the reason bathroom designers specify pairs rather than a single fixture overhead.

The two light version stacks vertically at 13 inches high, useful in a narrow gap. The three light is horizontal at 17 inches wide and mounts above a mirror as a conventional vanity bar. That is the simplest option where there is no wall space to either side of the glass.

Finish, Shade Material and Bulbs

Brass, black and nickel are offered. Brass is the warmest and the one shown in most of the images; black gives more contrast against pale tile; nickel is the quietest and reads closest to standard bathroom fittings. An alabaster shade replaces the ribbed glass where a fully opaque, softer look is wanted.

The fitting takes an E12 candelabra bulb up to 40W or its LED equivalent, not included, and it dims with a compatible dimmer switch. A warm filament style LED suits the ribbing best, since the ribs need a compact source to refract properly. Shades measure 4.5 inches across by 5 inches high, and the backplate covers a standard wall box at 5 inches in diameter.
