Outdoor Wall Sconce with an Up and Down LED Cube
A plain aluminium cube that throws a wedge of light up the wall and another down it, with nothing visible from the front but the shape itself. The body is die-cast aluminium rated IP65, and it can be specified hardwired or solar, with or without a motion sensor. Warm white 3000K light covers 32 to 54 square feet. At 4.33 inches on each face it is small enough to repeat along a wall without dominating it, which is how the fixture is usually used.

The up and down cube has become the default contemporary exterior sconce, and the reason is that it does not read as a light fitting at all. Switched off it is a small dark square on the wall. Switched on it produces two clean triangles of light and the fixture itself disappears between them, which is the effect most modern facades are after.
Hardwired or Solar, Sensor or Not
The hardwired version runs at 12W on a standard circuit and gives consistent output every night regardless of weather. It is the right choice anywhere a supply already exists, and the only choice where the light needs to be reliable, such as a front entrance.
The solar version carries panels on three sides of the cube and needs no cable at all, which puts it on fence posts and boundary walls where wiring is impractical. A motion sensor option is available and pairs particularly well with solar, since triggering only on approach conserves the charge. On a hardwired circuit the same sensor simply saves running the light through an empty night.
The Beam Shape and How to Space Them
The openings on the top and bottom faces produce two defined wedges rather than a soft wash. On a smooth surface such as render the edges of those wedges stay crisp, which is the look in most of the images here. On brick or stone the texture breaks the beam up and the effect is softer.
Spacing matters more than brightness. Set too close together the wedges overlap into an even wash and the pattern is lost; set eight to ten feet apart they stay distinct and the rhythm along the wall is what carries the effect.
Materials, Rating and Finish
Die-cast aluminium is used throughout, which will not rust and moves heat away from the LED. IP65 seals the fixture against dust and driven rain, so it can sit on an exposed elevation rather than needing an eave over it. The cast body also keeps its shape in frost, where a moulded plastic housing can distort and break the seal around the lens.
Black and white finishes are offered alongside the three sided solar panel version. Black is the more common pick and holds up best against render and timber; white suits pale weatherboard where a dark square would read as a hole in the wall. Weight is 1.54 pounds, so the fixture mounts on cladding or render without a backing plate, and the small footprint keeps the fixing pattern simple.
