Pendant lighting over an island is one of the few places in a house where the fixture has to do a real job and be looked at from every seat in the room. Hang something too wide and it blocks the view across the bench. Hang something that throws light sideways and it glares at anyone sitting opposite. Hanging Height and Spacing Over an Island
The usual working figure is roughly 30 to 36 in of clear air between the bench top and the bottom of the shade. Higher than that and the light spreads thin. For spacing, two pendants suit an island up to about 6 ft and three suit a longer run, set at even intervals with roughly half an interval to each end. Because this fixture is only 4 in across, the gaps between the shades read as generous rather than cramped even with three in a row, which is harder to pull off with a wide dome or a large glass globe.
Choosing a Bulb, and Why That Matters Here
No bulb is supplied. The socket takes a standard E26 or E27 screw fitting and accepts LED, incandescent or fluorescent, so you pick the light rather than inherit it. That is a genuine advantage over an integrated fixture: if the light over your island turns out too cool or too dim, you change a bulb instead of the whole pendant.
Because the base of the cylinder is open, the bulb is partly visible from below and from a seated position across the bench. A frosted or opal bulb is the safer choice for that reason. A clear filament bulb looks good in photographs but puts a bright point source in the field of view of anyone sitting at the island.
The Five Colors, and Where the Wood Sits
The metal shade comes in black, gray, green, yellow and pink, and the wood top is the same natural finish across all five. That top is doing more work than it appears to. It is the part that ties a strong color like the yellow or the pink back to timber elsewhere in the room, which is what keeps a colored pendant from looking like an accident against a plain kitchen.
Black and gray behave as neutrals and disappear into most schemes. Green reads as the quiet one of the three colors. Yellow and pink are the statements, and they work best when repeated, either as a row of matching pendants or picked up in a stool, a splashback or a piece of art nearby.
