Engraved Glass Globe Flush Mount Ceiling Light Vintage Brass

An engraved globe does something a plain one cannot. The raised pattern in the glass refracts the light unevenly, which throws a soft decorative shadow onto the ceiling around the fitting. In a hallway with nothing else on the ceiling, that pattern is most of the reason to choose this fixture over a plain glass dome that costs the same.

Glass Globe Ceiling Light Colours And Size

Three combinations are offered: clear glass on a brass base, clear glass on a black base, and green glass on a brass base. The photography shows all three, and the green glass is a deep bottle tone that reads much darker than the clear version when the fixture is off and noticeably warmer when it is on.

The globe is 5.9 inches in diameter and the fixture is 7.7 inches high overall. Weight is 2.4 pounds. That is a small fitting by ceiling light standards, which is deliberate: it is sized to be repeated along a hallway rather than to act as a single centrepiece.

Running Several Along A Hallway

A single small flush mount in the middle of a long corridor leaves both ends dim. Two or three spaced evenly along the run give a far more even result, and because each fitting is only 5.9 inches across, a row of them does not read as cluttered.

The photography shows pairs in a kitchen and above a bed, and singles in a stairwell and a study. As a rule, space them at roughly the ceiling height apart and keep the end fittings about half that distance from the walls.

Bulbs, Wiring And Cleaning

The fixture is hardwired and takes an E26 bulb up to 60 watts, with no bulb supplied. The glass is clear rather than opaque, so the bulb is visible through it. A frosted bulb keeps the glare down and lets the engraved pattern read; a clear filament bulb gives a sharper shadow pattern but is harsher to look at directly.

Engraved glass collects dust in the recesses of the pattern more readily than smooth glass does. It is worth taking the globe down occasionally and washing it rather than dusting it in place, because dust sitting in the engraving is what dulls the shadow pattern over time.

The base is powder coated or painted metal in brass or black. Both are opaque, so the light that reaches the ceiling comes through the top of the glass globe rather than around the fitting. That is what produces the ring of pattern directly around the base, and it is why the fixture looks best on a plain ceiling with nothing else competing for attention within a foot or so of it.

At 2.4 pounds the fitting is light enough that the installation is straightforward, and the hardwired connection sits entirely inside the ceiling box behind the base.
