Outdoor lighting fails in two ways. It corrodes, or it blinds you. Aluminum handles the first, since it does not rust the way steel does when the coating is eventually chipped. A closed shell that throws light up and down the wall rather than outward handles the second, which is why this shape works next to a door you walk through every day.

What IP66 buys you outdoors

The first digit, 6, means dust tight. Nothing gets inside, which matters more than people expect, because fine dust and insects inside a fitting are what cause most outdoor light failures over a few years.

The second 6 means protection against powerful water jets. That covers driving rain, a hose and a pressure washer at a sensible distance. It is a step above the IP65 fittings that are more common at this size, and it makes the light suitable for an exposed wall rather than only a sheltered one. It is still not rated for immersion, so keep it above any point where water can pool.

Where to mount it and how many

Either side of a front door is the classic placement, and a matched pair at the same height reads as deliberate where a single light off to one side rarely does. Aim for roughly 5 to 6 feet from the ground, which puts the fitting near eye level and the light where you need it on the step.

Along a path, a garden wall or a run of steps, space several at even intervals. Because the output is directed up and down rather than sideways, they light the wall surface and the ground close to it, so spacing them further apart than you would a floodlight leaves dark gaps between the pools. On steps, mount them low, at around knee height, so the light lands on the treads rather than in the face of anyone coming up.

The 7 watt LED and warm white output

Seven watts is modest, and that is appropriate here. This is accent and wayfinding light, not security floodlighting. It marks a door, edges a path and puts a warm glow on a wall. If you need to light a whole driveway or deter someone, this is not the fitting for that job.

Warm white at 3000K is the only color temperature offered, which is the right call for a home exterior. It flatters brick, render, timber and stone, where a cooler 5000K or 6000K light makes the same materials look grey and institutional. The LED is integrated and included, so there is no bulb to buy, and the fitting is replaced rather than relamped at end of life.
