Modern Wall Sconce Ribbed Porcelain Shade Brass Fitting for Foyers

Most white shades are glass or acrylic. Porcelain is a different material and it behaves differently. It is opaque, so no filament shows through at any brightness. It has weight, so the fixture feels solid rather than light. And it takes a crisp moulded rib that glass would round off. Against a brass fitting the result reads closer to a bathroom or scullery fitting from a hundred years ago than to a modern one, which is the appeal.

Two Ways to Hang the Same Shade

The shape option is really a mounting option. One version puts the shade on a short rigid brass arm that holds it out from the wall at a fixed angle. It sits close, reads tidy and suits a spot where you do not want anything hanging.

The other version drops the shade on a braided fabric cord from a small brass hook. The shade hangs free and sits lower on the wall. It is the softer, more relaxed of the two and it works beside a mirror or a bed where a little length looks better than none.

Which Shade Size to Pick

The smallest is 5 in. It is a slim capsule shape and it disappears into a wall rather than announcing itself. The 6 in is the middle option and the most generally useful.

The 8.5 in is the wide one, close to a squat sphere, and it is the size that reads as a feature. Beside a mirror in a foyer or above a console table it holds its own. In a narrow corridor it may be more than you want. Measure the wall before you choose.

All three sizes are ribbed the same way and all three come in either mount. The rib runs vertically down the shade, so a taller shade shows more of it. On the 5 in capsule the fluting is fine and close. On the 8.5 in it is broad and obvious.

Light, Bulbs and Fitting

Because the porcelain is opaque, the light comes out of the open bottom of the shade and glows dimly through the walls of it. You get a pool of light below and a soft white shape on the wall. It is not a reading light. It is the fixture you fit when you want the wall to look good.

The socket takes an E26 or E27 bulb and none is included. Any warm white LED works since the shade hides the bulb. The sconce is hardwired to a wall box with no plug or cord switch. It is rated for 110V-120V as well as 220V-240V, so it suits a US circuit, and it weighs about 2.2 lb.
