Geometric Cage Pendant Light Metal Open Frame for Kitchen Islands

An open cage is a strange kind of shade. It does not hide the bulb and it does not aim the light. What it does is give the fixture a shape without taking any brightness away. That matters over a kitchen island, where you want the bench lit and the rest of the room lit too. A solid pendant makes a bright circle and a dark kitchen. A cage does not.

Hanging a Cage Pendant Over an Island

The usual rule is 30 to 36 in between the bench top and the bottom of the pendant. That is high enough to see across and low enough to light the work. This cage is 9.5 in tall, so allow for that when you set the cord.

For spacing, two pendants suit an island up to about 6 ft. Three suit anything longer. Keep them at least 24 in apart and about 12 in in from each end. The cage is only 8.5 in wide, so they will not look crowded even on a short run.

The frame also throws a pattern. With a bare bulb inside an open cage, the metal struts cast their own lines across the ceiling and the wall. In a room with a plain ceiling that is a real part of the effect, and it is the reason a cage pendant looks busier lit than it does switched off.

The Bulb Is Part of the Look

Nothing covers the bulb here, so the bulb is the fixture. A vintage style filament bulb is the obvious match and it is what the photos use. A plain frosted globe works too and is easier on the eyes.

Avoid a bare high output LED. With no shade to soften it, a bright cool bulb will glare straight at anyone sitting at the bench. Warm white around 2700K is the safe choice. No bulb comes with the fixture, so order one with it.

Cord, Canopy and Finish

The cord is 39 in long. On a standard 8 ft ceiling that lands the pendant at a sensible height over a bench. It can be shortened at the canopy if you need it higher. The canopy is 4 in wide and covers a normal ceiling box.

The frame comes in black or gold. Black reads industrial and disappears against a dark ceiling. Gold reads warmer and picks up brass tapware and handles. Both are the same fixture, same size, same cage. The whole thing weighs about 2.6 lb, so it does not need any special mounting.
