Crystal and glass look similar switched off and behave completely differently switched on. Glass passes light through fairly evenly. Cut crystal bends it at every facet, splits it and sends it off in different directions. That is why a crystal fixture sparkles and a glass one glows. It is also why crystal works best in a dim room, where there is contrast for the sparkle to show against.

How the Cut Column Handles the Light

The shade is a squat column of crystal cut into long vertical facets all the way round. The bulb sits inside it. Each facet acts as a small prism, so the light leaves in a dozen directions at once instead of straight out.

From the front you see bright vertical lines running down the crystal. On the wall around it you get scattered points of light rather than a single soft pool. Move your head and the pattern changes, because you are seeing different facets. A smooth glass shade does none of this.

The frame is a thin gold bar that wraps over the top and down one side, holding the crystal against a round backplate. It is deliberately minimal so the crystal does the work.

Where to Put It

A sparkle effect needs darkness to show against. In a bright kitchen you will lose most of it. In a bedroom, a hallway, a stairwell or beside a mirror in the evening it does exactly what you bought it for.

The fixture is 9 in wide and 8.5 in high and sits tight to the wall, so it suits a corridor where a deeper fitting would be in the way. Beside a bed, mount the backplate around 30 in above the mattress. In a hallway, eye level or a little above is right.

One more thing worth knowing. Crystal shows dust more than most materials, because dust sits in the cut grooves and dulls the sparkle. A dry brush every few months keeps it working.

Bulbs and Installation

The socket is E12 or E14, the small candle size, not the standard screw base. No bulb is included, so check what you have before ordering. A clear bulb gives the sharpest sparkle because it puts out a small bright source for the facets to work with.

Warm white near 2700K keeps the gold frame looking warm. The sconce is hardwired with no plug and no cord, so it runs from a wall switch and needs a junction box. It is rated for 110V-120V as well as 220V-240V, and weighs about 3.5 lb.
