Candle Warmer Lamp with a Fluted Flower Glass Shade

A candle warmer works from the top down. Instead of lighting the wick, a bulb above the jar heats the surface of the wax until the fragrance oils release. Nothing burns, so the scent is cleaner and the candle lasts several times longer than it would lit. The wick stays dry and unused, which is the part most people do not expect the first time they use one.

Why a warmer beats burning the candle

Burning a candle destroys fragrance oil along with the wax, and it produces soot. Warming releases the same oils at a lower temperature without combustion, so you get more scent from the same jar and no black marks on the glass or the ceiling above it.

The practical difference is cost per hour. A jar candle that gives perhaps forty hours of burn time will keep releasing fragrance far longer on a warmer, because you are only melting the top layer rather than consuming the wax. It also removes the fire risk entirely, which matters in a bedroom or a house with pets.

Using the dimmer and the timer

The dimmer does two jobs at once on this kind of lamp. Turning it down lowers the light, and because the same halogen bulb provides the heat, it also slows the melt. On a strongly scented candle a lower setting is usually better, since a fully melted pool releases fragrance faster than a room needs.

The timer is the feature worth having. A warmer left on all night will melt a full pool and waste fragrance, and it is easy to forget. Setting it to switch off after an hour or two gives you the scent through an evening without running the bulb overnight. It also protects the candle. Repeated full melts and cools can cause the wax to pull away from the glass, so shorter warming sessions keep the jar looking better for longer.

Fitting your candle under the shade

The base is a fixed size, so check your candle before ordering. A standard medium jar candle sits comfortably underneath, but a very tall jar can sit too close to the bulb and a very wide one may not fit the recess in the wooden base at all. Measure the jar you plan to use.

Two things the supplier does not state, and worth knowing. The housing material is not specified anywhere in the documentation, so treat the finish as decorative rather than as solid brass. The halogen bulb is included but will eventually need replacing, and since halogen runs hot, keep the lamp clear of curtains and anything that could fall onto it.
