The appeal of a glass tube wall sconce is that it takes up almost no visual width. The shade is only an inch and a half across, so a pair either side of a bathroom mirror adds light without closing in the wall. The ribbing is the functional part: it scatters the light sideways and stops the bulb reading as a single bright filament in a small room.

The frame is metal and the shade is ribbed glass. The shade measures 1.5 inches in diameter and 8 inches long, carried on a half inch stem from a 4.75 inch round backplate. The one light version is 4.75 inches wide, 3 inches deep and 12.5 inches high overall. The two light version keeps the same width and depth and extends to 19.5 inches high.

Three finishes are offered: tumbled brass, chrome and bronze. The photography supplied with this product shows the brass finish only, so treat the chrome and bronze options as unphotographed rather than assuming they match the images. Weight is 3.5 pounds.

Vertical Or Horizontal Mounting

The fixture is designed to mount either way up, which is more useful than it sounds. Mounted vertically it reads as a slim column and works either side of a mirror. Mounted horizontally it becomes a short bar that can sit above a mirror or a picture, which is often the better answer when there is no clear wall to the sides.

The backplate is round in both orientations, so the fixture does not look like it has been turned on its side. Plan the junction box position before ordering, because the mounting direction is decided at installation and not afterwards.

Bulbs And Electrical Requirements

The sconce is hardwired and takes an E12 candelabra base bulb, specified as a 40 watt type B or an LED equivalent. Bulbs are not included. Because the glass is clear and ribbed rather than opaque, the bulb is partly visible, so a candle shaped bulb suits the fitting better than a squat globe.

There is no switch on the fixture, so it runs from a wall switch on the circuit. The supplier does not give an ingress protection rating. It is listed for bathroom use, but keep it away from direct spray and confirm the zone requirements for your own bathroom before installing.

The two light version doubles the output and adds seven inches of height rather than width, which is worth noting if you are working to a fixed gap either side of a mirror. It is the better choice where one fitting has to light a whole vanity on its own.
